Dollhouse History Detective
Hey so remember that uncredited dollhouse photo I posted, where I was bemoaning the lack of background information, and that we’d never know if it belonged to some famous 18th century princess or whatever? I guessed it was English, neo Palladian? I did a little research, and turns out, it’s 18th century English, neo Palladian. And it wasn’t built for a princess (it was built for...

Attention designers and creative history nerds!
The Great Within is holding a design contest inspired by the incredible ornamental plasterwork of the 18th century Mompesson House, in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. The house has been in the ownership of the National Trust since 1952. Fun fact: this house was used as a location in the 1995 film Sense and Sensibility. The contest asks potential participants to submit design proposals for a room ...

Can you believe someone was throwing this book...
Pages from James ‘Athenian’ Stuart: The Rediscovery of Antiquity (Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design & Culture) by Dr Susan Weber Soros My dad gave this to me recently - he found it abandoned on the streets of the Upper East Side, tossed out with the trash. Imagine that, a perfectly good, beautiful $150 book, brimming with antiquities, in the garbage. Mine...

Whitewashed
All week long I have been cleaning, scrubbing and sanding the dollhouse back to life, in preparation for painting it this weekend. I stripped all the wallpaper and flooring using a mix of vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle, with a wire brush, sandpaper, a paint scraper, and my bare hands. No easy feat. I wish they made miniature tools, because let me tell you - it is quite difficult...

My miniature showhouse vision - can you see it?
Here are my basic interior ideas for the dollhouse renovation. All room photos were taken during the process of stripping the wallpaper, so forgive the mess and poor lighting. (Tumblr dashboard readers please click through so smaller images are aligned correctly) LIVING ROOM/ENTRY  This room is going to be modern Hollywood Regency meets neoclassical French Empire/Directoire style. I am going...
