The Peacock Room, ca. 1876-77

From the London home of Frederick R. Leyland, now in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian.

Designed by Thomas Jeckyll and painted by James McNeill Whistler

This room has a pretty colorful story behind it - see the two peacocks? They’re supposed to represent the artist and the patron, one holding a paintbrush and the other a bag of money, fighting. That pretty much sums it up, but you can read the whole tale yourself here and here.
