Chicklet sofas, designed by Ray Wilkes for Herman Miller, 1976, (note the Frank Stella painting) and so named because of the resemblance of each individual piece of the sofa to pieces of Chicklet chewing gum.
Ray Wilkes seems to be completely under-appreciated on the internet, no Wikipedia page or much information via google. It was neat to learn he is still around because I came across a few blog posts on his designs where it appears he actually commented personally (example)!
Here is a brief summary of his work via metro retro:

Originally from Surrey, England, Ray Wilkes brought a combination of British precision and wit to Herman Miller. He earned a design degree from the Royal College of Art in London in 1961 and was awarded an American Travel Scholarship. He became acquainted with Herman Miller when he worked in New York with George Nelson on special products R&D.
